Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind

1. Obtain copies of your family's medical records, including any dental and immunization information, as well as any veterinary records for the family pet. You might also consider transferring current prescriptions to a drugstore in your new town. You'll want to be sure to have your child's permanent school record.
2. If you've hidden any valuables around the house, be sure to collect them before leaving. Carry valuable items such as jewelry with you or keep them in a safe deposit box instead of packing them on the moving van.
3. Pack phone books from your existing residence to take with you. You can save a small fortune on directory assistance charges should you need to contact old friends or tie up loose ends.
4. Remember to collect all items that are being cleaned, stored or repaired (for example, dry cleaning, shoes, watches, etc.). Also, remember to return any library books, movie rentals and anything else you may have checked out. Don’t forget to return your cable television box.
5. Keep your new address handy in your wallet or purse.
6. Remember to leave out cleaning supplies for the final “once-over” before closing the door for good, or make arrangements in advance for a service to clean for you.
7. Remember to leave the garage door remote opener for the new residents.
8. In most cases, moving companies cannot transport animals or plants. Plan ahead and make arrangements for their safe transfer.
9. It's wise to open a checking account in your new town about a month prior to your move so that you have immediate access to your funds. It enables you to have a little cash on hand for any unexpected expenses.
10. Remember to collect spare house keys from neighbors or from under the rock next to the front door.

Saving Money On Your Next Moved

1. Do the packing by yourself. Moving companies charge a lot of money for packing materials and for packing services. That means that the moving companies charge you for the cost of the packing materials and for the labor.
2. You can save money by providing a correct list of your household goods to the moving companies. By doing that you are saving hidden and higher charges for additional articles that are not included in your original moving estimate.
3. You can also save money and headache if you don’t accept automatically the lowest moving estimate or offer that you receive. Think about it, there are a lot of expenses for the moving companies and if their offer is to low something is not right.
4. Get everything organized at least one month before your move date. Items that you have and you don't really need or items that you probably going to replace, donate them or sell them. They will help someone else and they will save you some money. You can sell them by a garage sale, by internet or by a local newspaper.

Where To Start

When planning a move there are many things to take into consideration. One of the most important is whether to move yourself or hire professionals. When making this decision, there are several things to think about.
Moving yourself can save money, but it takes much longer. You have to pack your belongings, find vehicles to move with, load and finally unload everything. This process will give you more control over the move and will allow you to move things at your own pace.
If however, you decide to use professional movers you will free yourself of the extra time and intense physical effort of the move. Professional movers do cost more, but they also provide many services that are worth the expense. Moving companies can simply be used to move the pre packed boxes and furniture or they can pack, move and unpack everything for you.
Once you work out the details of your move (i.e. distance, how many items or boxes, weight of items, transportation costs) you can evaluate cost versus convenience in order to make the best decision. You should contact local moving companies and self moving businesses in order to find out the pricing and options available.
